Pillars of Health 2 : Poor Diet

Yesterday, we talked about the negative consequences of a poor diet, but didn’t define what a poor diet is.  Today, we’ll talk about that.  This information comes from the Global Burden of Disease Report, 2017, from the Lancet.  Basically, a poor diet is: high in sodium, low in whole grains, low in fruits, low in nuts and seeds, low in vegetables, low in omega-3 fatty acids, low in fiber, low in polyunsaturated fats, low in legumes, high in trans fats, low in calcium, high I sugar-sweetened beverages, high in processed meats, low in mil, and high in red meat.  These categories are linked with a certain number of deaths worldwide.  The interesting thing about this list is that the greatest number of deaths starts at the beginning of the list (sodium), and the lowest number of deaths is at the end of the list (red meat), and that the the 6 items are pretty close to each other as far as number of deaths are concerned.  Focusing on the top 6 categories would reduce deaths far more than focusing the last 9.  What can you take away from this?  See if there is anything on this list that matches up with your diet, and work on changing them, particularly if they are in the top half of the list.
