Maximum Heart Rate

What is your maximum heart rate, and how do you calculate it?  Max heart rate is the upper limit of what your heart can do during exercise.  This decreases with age, but we can modify it with regular exercise.  There are two ways to estimate this.  One is quick and easy, but perhaps not as accurate - 220-Age.  The other requires a pen and paper, or calculator, but is more accurate - 206.9-(0.67xAge).  For me, the first method gives me a max heart rate of 157, while the second method gives me a max heart rate of 171.  It is helpful to figure this out before you start exercising so you know your limits and can track your progress either by taking breaks to check your pulse, or using a fitness watch like Garmin, FitBit, Apple, etc.

Remember: before starting an exercise program, talk with your doctor first.
